UPDATE: Child Fatally Burned In Hot Bathtub Just Days After Being Returned By CPS; Mom In Custody

INKSTER (WWJ) - A 2-year-old boy who died after being pulled from a tub of scalding hot water had apparently just been returned to the family by Child Protective Services workers and now, police are wondering if his mother is responsible for his death.

The boy's mother called police around 7 p.m. Monday after finding the child found face down in about three inches of water at her home on Avondale Street, just east of John Daly Road in Inkster.

When first responders arrived at the scene, the child was still in the upstairs bathtub.

"My understanding is the Inkster Fire Rescue was able to get the child out," Lt. Jeff Twardzik told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "They got the child out and started rescue procedures right at the scene."

The child was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. Despite all efforts by doctors, the boy died. Officials say more than 50 percent of his body was covered with burns.

It's not clear how long the boy was in the water before his mother found him. She was questioned by investigators at the scene and is considered a suspect in the case.

"The mother is in custody at this time," Twardzik said. "We're dealing with looking at all the angles as far as what we're going to do with the prosecutor's office, but the mother is in custody at this time."

According to reports, the child was returned to his mother by Child Protective Services just days before his death. Circumstances surrounding his removal from the family were not immediately known.

"Our understanding is there has been some issues with CPS in the past where the children have been placed on a basis where there was an investigation and they've been put back in the home recently,"said Twardzik. "We want to know all the answers. We have a lot of questions here that need to be answered right away."

Several people, including an adult male and three other children, were in the home when the incident occurred.

An investigation is ongoing.
