Former Michigan Guard Formally Joins Purdue Program

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Former Michigan guard Spike Albrecht will finish his basketball career at Purdue, Boilermakers coach Matt Painter announced Monday.

Albrecht is a graduate transfer and will be eligible to compete immediately — once he is granted a waiver from Big Ten officials.

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound guard grew up in Crown Point, Indiana, and appeared in 115 games for Michigan including the 2013 national championship game. Albrecht made four 3-pointers and scored 17 points in an 82-76 loss to Louisville in that game, a performance that got him on the all-tournament team.

But last December, Albrecht announced he would no longer play because a nagging hip injury was forcing him to finish his career.

Painter says Albrecht will add toughness and leadership to his backcourt.
