Man Acquitted In EMU Football Player's Murder Sentenced In Detroit Shooting
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A man who was acquitted of murder and other charges in the 2013 robbery and killing of 20-year-old Eastern Michigan University wide receiver Demarius Reed has been sentenced in an unrelated Detroit shooting.
The Wayne County prosecutor's office says 23-year-old Ed Thomas received two years' probation Tuesday.
Thomas was accused of shooting at two men in May 2015 who he believed were following him. Prosecutors have said Thomas got out of his car and fired multiple shots.
He pleaded no contest to felonious assault. A no contest plea isn't an admission of guilt but is treated as such for sentencing. Assault with intent to murder and other charges were dismissed.
Kristopher Pratt confessed in the killing of Reed, a Chicago native, at an off-campus apartment in Ypsilanti. Reed was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds on Oct. 18. Pratt, who confessed to Reed's murder in 2013, testified that Thomas participated in the robbery -- even saying that Thomas had handed him the gun.
Thomas, who had refused to make a deal with prosecutors, was found not guilty in the Reed case in the summer of 2014. His attorney argued Thomas was just hanging out with Pratt the night of the killing and wasn't part of the crime.
