Mom Located After Son's Decomposing Body Found In Detroit Apartment

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Police say the missing mother of a young boy whose decomposing body was found in a Detroit apartment has been located in the psychiatric unit of an area hospital.

Officer Jennifer Moreno told The Detroit News that investigators will be notified when she's released and she could be taken into police custody.

Police said the boy — later identified as 3-year-old Aaron Minor — may have been dead for more than a week before his body was discovered Wednesday by a maintenance worker who noticed a strong odor in the unit, in the 4400 block of Trumbull near Canfield, in the city's Midtown area.

There was no one at home with the boy, who police said was named Aaron, when he was found.

A neighbor had said she wondered whether the mother had moved and said she didn't hear any cries from the apartment.

When investigators began a search for his parents, they found that the mother was hospitalized, beginning Tuesday, May 17, after someone found her lying in the grass in front of the apartment building. Police said she was transferred from Detroit Receiving Hospital to Ann Arbor before being released this Tuesday, May 24.

After that, she was apparently admitted into psychiatric care.

Police have not discussed a possible case of death for the boy.  Investigators on Thursday were awaiting autopsy results and say the woman could face charges.

Her name has not been released.
