Royal Oak To Discuss Management Of Deer In Local Cemetery

ROYAL OAK (AP) — Officials are expected to discuss how to best manage about 30 deer roaming through a cemetery near the downtown area of a Detroit suburb.

The Daily Tribune of Royal Oak reports that Royal Oak city commissioners will take up the issue Monday evening.

The deer are in Oakview Cemetery and some are being fed by humans.

City Manager Don Johnson tells the newspaper that Royal Oak has no intention of culling the herd, which he says "doesn't solve anything" because "any place there is a food source the deer are going to go."

Johnson said there also are "a lot of plants in the cemetery that deer like to eat."

Last month, staff at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak caught a deer after it wandered into the venue.
