Baseball And Blue Monday: Ken Griffey Talks Men's Health And Prostate Cancer Awareness

DETROIT (WWJ) - It's a Blue Monday across Metro Detroit -- and even the Spirit of Detroit is getting in on it. It's "wear blue for men's health" -- an effort to encourage an open dialogue between fathers and sons about men's health issues.

Baseball all star Ken Griffey Sr. stopped by the studios at WWJ Newsradio 950 to talk about the importance of communicating with your doctor.

"If you don't talk to your doctors and tell them what's going on -- you'll never know because with prostate cancer -- it's a disease where you don't know you have symptoms until you find out or you go to the doctor and get tested," said Griffey.

Blue Monday kicks off asking men, women and children to dress in blue and men are encouraged to take part in some healthful activity and share on social media.

Prostate cancer is the most common type of non-skin cancer found in American men, affecting one in seven, and is the second leading cause of cancer death for men, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS).

The ACS estimates nearly 181,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed this year.

Griffey will take part in the official kick-off of Men's Health Week. It takes place in front of the Spirit of Detroit Statue on Woodward Avenue in Downtown Detroit. The kickoff hashtag is #BlueMonday2016.
