FBI Continues Investigation Into Orlando Nightclub Shooting

DETROIT (WWJ) - From Europe to the Middle East and Asia, condemnation is nearly universal following the nightclub attack in Florida.

Federal authorities say Omar Mateen, the suspect in the mass nightclub shooting in Orlando, called 911 during the attack and pledged his allegiance to ISIS, during a rampage in which 50 people were killed, and another 53 injured early Sunday morning.

Dan Roberts, Former Assistant Director of the FBI, talked about what's next in the investigation.

"They will be marshaling a lot of resources down into Florida, in other words, they will be sending a lot of additional agents and intelligence analysts down there they will be conducting searches they will be doing deep dives into the suspects cell phones and computers," said Roberts.

"Unless somebody has been charged with a crime, or convicted of a crime or they are deemed mentally deficient - or they have another prohibitor that's been stated in the federal statutes - they can purchase a hand-gun in this particular case, as far as I'm aware, the suspect had never been convicted or for that matter charged with a crime."

Retired FBI agent Bill Kowalski says from experience the FBI is going through all of the shooter's social media, talking to his friends and reviewing his travel.

"We are the freest society in the world and even if you look at Mr. Mateen, he had communication with some radicalized elements but being in contact or looking at a blog or reading up on information is not a crime," said Kowalski.

Nevertheless, because the FBI had previous contact with the shooter that gives the FBI a head start into what will be an extensive investigation.
