Documents: Detroit People Mover Went For 8 Stops After Fatally Striking Man

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Documents say a Detroit People Mover train continued along its route uninterrupted for eight stops after running over a man last month.

Workers appeared to have been unaware that 53-year-old Michael Whyte of Detroit fell onto the automated rail system's tracks May 15 until they were notified by police that someone was struck, according to a report in The Detroit Free Press.

Documents reviewed by the newspaper show an approximately 13- or 14-minute gap between the time Whyte fell between two rail cars onto the tracks while trying to board a train at the Times Square station and when police contacted People Mover workers after getting a 911 call.

The city has said there appeared to be no operational or mechanical issues involving the train leading to the death, which was deemed accidental.
