Couple Convicted Of Abuse; Boy Kept In Basement

HOWELL, Mich. (AP) - A couple accused of keeping an adopted son isolated in the basement have been convicted of second-degree child abuse in Livingston County.

The boy, now 17, told jurors that he wasn't allowed upstairs unless someone was home in Deerfield Township. Authorities say Eric and Angela Corcoran treated their other children much more favorably.

Defense lawyers say there was no evidence of physical abuse. They say prosecutors were interfering with the couple's parenting style.

The Livingston Daily Press & Argus says the Corcorans will return to court for their sentence on July 28. The teen now is with a foster family.
