Boil Water Advisory In Effect For Area Of Detroit After Water Main Break

DETROIT (WWJ) - A boil water advisory has been issued for some Detroit residents after a large water main break.

Officials with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department say people living between West Jefferson Ave. and Vernor Highway and between Miller Road and Livernois should boil their drinking water until further notice.

A 42-inch water main broke Wednesday morning causing low pressure in the lines. Repairs continued into the afternoon.

A notice by the DWSD urges residents in the affected area to do the following:

• Bring water to a rolling boil for one minute;
• Allow the water to cool before using; and
• Store the cooled water in a clean container with a cover.
Customers in the defined area should use boiled water that has cooled or bottled water for:
• Drinking;
• Brushing teeth;
• Washing fruits and vegetables;
• Preparing food and baby formula;
• Making ice; and
• Giving to pets.

The advisory is in effect until DWSD and the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) have determined boiling water is no longer necessary. Test sampling is currently being conducted and should be completed by Saturday, July 23. Customers will be notified immediately when the advisory is lifted. DWSD will provide updates at this link.

If residents or businesses have no water service in the area defined in this advisory, they should call the DWSD emergency line at 313-267-7401.
