Heat Advisory In Effect Thursday-Friday In Metro Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - High temperatures and humidity will bake much of the central U.S. this week, sending heat indexes soaring as high as 115 degrees — and metro Detroit is not immune.

The National Weather Service says the high pressure system, sometimes called a "heat dome" will push conditions to their hottest point this summer with an excessive heat warning in effect for some areas of the U.S.

"There's some incredible heat and the humidity levels are extremely high as well," said WWJ AccuWeather Meteorologist Dave Samuel. "We're looking at some nasty weather anywhere from the Canadian border all the way down into Texas and Louisianan."

Although conditions might not be as extreme in our area, Metro Detroit will be affected.

The NWS has issued a Heat Advisory in effect for all of the WWJ Newsradio 950 listening area including Lenawee , Livingston , Macomb  Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne counties — in effect from 1 p.m. Thursday through 10 p.m. Friday.

Samuel says it looks like it'll be our hottest stretch of the summer, Thursday into the weekend, with highs in the mid-90s. He said the humidity, however, will make it feel like it's 100 degrees or hotter in metro Detroit.

The weather services reminds residents to avoid prolonged sun exposure due to risk of heat-related illnesses, to drink plenty of fluids, keep pets and children in air-conditioned rooms whenever possible, wear loose-fitting clothes, take frequent breaks if you work outside, and to reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening when it's not as hot.

Michiganders are also urged to check on elderly loved ones and neighbors who may not have air conditioning and to keep pets and kids out of the heat. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Officials blamed heat for the death last week of an elderly woman in St. Louis County, Missouri. In Illinois, a 4-year-old girl was hospitalized Tuesday after being found unresponsive in a hot vehicle in a northwest Chicago suburb.
