Expect Long Delays If You're Flying Southwest Airlines Out Of Detroit Metro Airport

ROMULUS (WWJ/AP) - While many travelers at Detroit Metro Airport are upset about waiting in long lines at Southwest Airlines ticket counters, the airline is saying it has fixed computer problems that have caused hundreds of flight to be cancelled or delayed.

Southwest has already canceled more than 220 flights on Thursday, and is telling other passengers to get to the airport early because there could be long lines.

Several travelers told WWJ's Charlie Langton they didn't receive any advance notice of the cancellations and found out about them only after arriving at Metro Airport. Some of the flights have been delayed until Sunday.

Peggy Puckett was on her way to Las Vegas when she got the frustrating news.

"They said their systems was down. But we didn't get an email until this morning, like at 5 o'clock, and they could have sent us that email last night so that we could have made other arrangements," she said.

Patricia Sims-Howard said it was "ridiculous" that her much-anticipated trip to Sin City has to now be cancelled because she can't get another flight.

"We were supposed to leave today and come back Tuesday. They don't have anything until Sunday coming back Tuesday," she said. "That's ridiculous. Nobody can go out there for two days."

Several of the airline's technology systems were affected by an outage that started Wednesday afternoon, causing the cancellation of nearly 700 flights and delays for hundreds more. Southwest's website crashed, and the airline briefly held up all departing flights on Wednesday.

In a statement, Southwest says that most systems are back online.

"Our Employees are the best in the business, and they are working extremely hard to get you and your luggage to your destination," Southwest's Linda Rutherford said in a statement. " Thank you for hanging in there with us. We will have more information later regarding flexible rebooking, and we will continue to work with each and every affected Customer to make this right."
