Crews To Inspect Basements Damaged By Backed Up Sewers In Detroit

DETROIT (AP) — City inspectors will visit homes on Detroit's east side to check for damage to basements and public health issues from backed up sewers during a July 8 rain storm.

Employees with the Detroit's Water and other departments were to go door-to-door Saturday through the Jefferson Chalmers and Cornerstone Village neighborhoods to speak with homeowners about cleanup assistance.

Beginning next week, inspectors will follow up with visits to the homes.

Based on the inspections, licensed contractors will sanitize basements that pose public health issues. Cost for basement cleaning and sanitation will be covered by the Water Department.

The city says residents who have already cleaned and sanitized their basements should keep receipts and file damage claim forms with the Water Department.
