Pedestrian Killed, Hit By Van In Pontiac

PONTIAC (WWJ) - A 56-year-old Pontiac man was killed over the weekend while walking in the street in Pontiac.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office is investigating the fatal accident that happened shortly before 9:30 p.m. Saturday along Auburn near Woodward Ave.

According to sheriff's officials, a 24-year-old Pontiac man in a 1999 GMC Savana van was headed eastbound on Auburn when he struck the man, who was not using a crosswalk.

Attempts by EMS to revive the victim failed and he was taken to McLaren Hospital - Oakland where he was pronounced dead. He'd suffered severe head trauma.

The driver of the van didn't initially stop at the scene but returned a short time later, according to deputies. The driver was not hurt.

Sheriff's officials say alcohol and/or drugs were not a factor on the part of the driver, but may have been on the part of the pedestrian.

It was not immediately known if any charged would be filed in the case. An investigation by the OCSO Crash Reconstruction unit is ongoing.

The victim's name is behind withheld until his family can be notified.
