The Snack Attack: Nabisco Mixes It Up With Choco Chip Oreos [TASTE TEST]

A world without Oreos is a world I want no part of. Luckily, it will never come to that because Nabisco just keeps churning out limited edition flavors of the classic sandwich cookie.

This summer we've already tried the Strawberry Shortcake Oreos, Fruity Crisp Oreos and Blueberry Pie Oreos. Finally, we're being treated with a flavor that has nothing to do with fruit: Choco Chip Oreos.

You pretty much couldn't ask for a more classic cookie combination: Oreos and chocolate chip. It's an obvious match made in cookie heaven.

And unlike any other Oreo before, these Choco Chip cookies feature a vanilla wafer that's swirled with chocolate and a cookie dough flavored filling.

Review: Choco Chip Oreos

Appearance: These just might be the coolest looking Oreos I've ever seen! Honestly, they hardly look like Oreos. The chocolate swirls on the wafers are different on every cookie, which are clearly double stuffed. I was expecting the filling to have more "chips" but I'm not sure that has any impact on the flavor. The package comes with 21 cookies and is FINALLY resealable. That was one of my biggest complaints about past limited edition Oreo flavors.

And If you're wondering why they're called choco chip and not chocolate chip, it's because the FDA has very strict rules when it comes to labeling a product as "chocolate" or "chocolate flavored" based on its ingredients.

Aroma: Unlike other special edition Oreos that are so fragrant the smell fills the room, these cookies hardly smell like anything. I was hoping for a fresh-baked out of the oven aroma but these kind of just smell like regular Oreos with a little extra vanilla.

Taste: Let's break it down first. The wafer itself reminds me of Teddy Grahams, while the filling is reminiscent of chocolate chip cookie dough, but without the chips. And what I mean by that is the cookie dough flavor isn't overly apparent -- you kind of have to "look" for it, but it's definitely there. The dark spotted chips (yes, I tried to extract just the chip) have no discernible flavor. Something worth noting is the filling is so much creamier than regular Oreo filling, it's more like frosting.

Now all at once. I'm not sure I'd say this tastes like a chocolate chip cookie. There's lots of vanilla with a hit of chocolate, but somehow it still has that classic Oreo taste. But the overall flavor is lacking. It is very, very sweet and after just a couple of cookies, I think I've had my fill.

Pros: Finally a special edition Oreo that comes in a resealable package! The wafer portion of this cookie is amazing, too bad the same can't be said for the creme.

Cons: Where's the chocolate chip flavor?!! These cookies are far too sweet with not enough payoff.

Rating: 4 out of 10 -- They're worth a try but if you're a die-hard chocolate chip cookie fan, you'll be disappointed.
