Keith Appling's Defense Attorney Moves To Suppress Evidence In Gun, Pot Case

DEARBORN (WWJ) - Former Michigan State University basketball player Keith Appling was in a Dearborn courtroom Friday to face weapons and marijuana charges.

Several pieces of evidence were presented to Judge William Hultgren at a preliminary in 19th District Court — including a 911 call, police dash cam video and a parking lot surveillance tapes.

One of Appling's attorneys, Amir Makled, told reporters they've filed a motion to suppress the evidence.

"And it'll show the totality of all the facts arising as to why Mr. Appling's vehicle was involved in this, in this seizure," Makled said.

"It's our contention that it was improper for the police to have held our client, and I think that after the judge has had an opportunity to review the video, we'll be able to make the sound legal arguments to show that that evidence should be suppressed."

In May, Appling was arrested outside a strip club on Michigan Ave. in Dearborn after security reported seeing him pull a gun from the trunk of a car in the parking lot. When police allegedly found the gun in the car, along with some pot, Appling was arrested at the scene.

He's charged with one count of carrying a concealed weapon, a five-year felony; possession of a loaded firearm in a vehicle, a two-year misdemeanor; and possession of marijuana, a one-year misdemeanor.

The judge said he'd review the video and the preliminary exam would continue Friday, Aug. 5.

Next week, in a separate case, the 24-year-old will be in court on a weapons charge for an arrest in Detroit.

Appling, who played for the Spartans from 2010 to 2014, is currently playing in the NBA's development league.
