12-Year-Old Girl Dies After Crash Linked To Man With Long DUI History

SUMPTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - A 12-year-old girl has died after her family's vehicle was hit in western Wayne County by a man with a dozen drunken-driving cases on his record.

Sumpter Township police said Sunday that the girl didn't survive her injuries. Her name wasn't immediately released.

She was traveling with family members Wednesday when the minivan was struck in the rear. Charles Cahill Jr. is accused of drunken driving, but the girl's death could lead to additional charges. His bond was set Saturday at $1 million.

Cahill was reportedly driving on a suspended license, along with an open container of alcohol in the car. He allegedly also had just been involved with a domestic issue.

It wasn't known if he has a lawyer who could be reached for comment.

Police say the crash has been "horrific" for the Sumpter Township department.

Cahill will be back in court on August 10.
