New Month, New Mess For Flint; Garbage Collection Stalled In The City

FLINT (WWJ) - Garbage could be piling up in the city of Flint.

Mayor Karen Weaver and the Flint City Council are at odds over trash collection. A Flint City Council member is suing the mayor after she insisted on hiring a new garbage contractor, even after the council voted to keep Republic Services on the job.

As the debate rages on, Weaver's office Saturday issued a statement announcing the city no longer has trash service. Garbage will not be picked up starting Monday.

It has left residents wondering what they're supposed to do with their trash -- leave it in the house? Let it idle at the curb?

"They've talked about not having time to vet it and not going through the process -- it did go through the process --and actually they were given a 30-day extension to vet it -- when they said there wasn't time originally," Weaver said about her stand off with City Council.

A judge held a hearing about the issue on Friday but Weaver was in Philadelphia attending the Democratic National Convention. The hearing will resume Tuesday.

It's unknown how long it will take for trash collection services to resume.
