Detroit Police Sergeant Shot On City's East Side

DETROIT (WWJ) -  Detroit's police chief says an officer is expected to survive after being shot by a suspect he was pursuing.

The incident happened around 11 p.m. Monday at a Sunoco gas station near Seven Mile and Hayes on the city's east side.

Chief James Craig said officers were converging on a 21-year-old man suspected in several crimes. A police supervisor "went in for pursuit," Craig said, and the suspect shot him with a sawed-off shotgun.

The sergeant — identified as Ken Steil, a 17-year veteran of the department — was shot in the shoulder. He was taken to St. John Hospital where he was reported to be in fair condition at noon.

"Anytime a police officer receives a gunshot wound, and he did, it's serious," Craig told reporters. "We cannot have people believing it's OK to shoot at police officers."

The suspect, whose name was not immediately released, was taken into custody without incident. Police said a weapon was recovered.

Craig said the suspect was wanted in the shooting of his own father during dinner at a home on Dickerson Ave. on Sunday.

The young man is said to be diagnosed with depression, and was not taking his medication.

An investigation is ongoing.
