366-Day Prison Sentence For Doctor In Painkiller Probe

DETROIT (AP) - A suburban Detroit plastic surgeon has been sentenced to a year and a day in prison for writing prescriptions for thousands of painkillers that weren't necessary.

In a court filing, prosecutors say Lauran Bryan's acts were baffling. The government says the Farmington Hills woman wrote prescriptions for people who were addicts, but she apparently didn't write them to get money.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says her medical practice was "dysfunctional." There was no sentencing memo from Bryan's attorney in the public court file.

Bryan appeared Tuesday in front of Judge Matthew Leitman. Her sentence was below the guidelines of 24 months to 30 months in prison, as outlined in her plea agreement.

A 366-day sentence qualifies Bryan for good conduct credits, which would reduce her time in prison.
