Detroiter Deirdre Skiles is happy that she doesn't have to go far to get her nails done, now that The TEN Nail Bar is officially opening in downtown Detroit's Capitol Park. It offers manis, pedis, coffee and adult beverages.

Skiles, who was getting a pedicure while talking to WWJ's Zahra Huber, said she just moved to Brush Park three years ago after living in New York for years. She said in Detroit, there really was no place for a manicure and pedicure.

"When I moved here, you had to go to the suburbs, kind of out of necessity, so it's nice to have this place here finally," said Skiles.

The TEN is owned by Anika Jackson and Kelli Coleman, both 31. Both grew up in Metro Detroit but moved out of state for college and work. They decided to open up a nail salon in downtown Detroit, an area that has been coming back to life over the years.

"It was like a tug, Detroit was calling us, like we needed to come back," said Jackson.

"There was the demand for it, especially here in the downtown area where of course you're seeing all of the business traffic, but in addition you're seeing a huge uptick in residential traffic as well," said Coleman.

Jackson said they started to pursue their business idea because there was an absence of nail salons in the downtown Detroit area.

As for what it means to be able to open up a business in Capitol Park: "Being from Detroit, or being a 'D Girl' as we sometimes say, it means the world to be able to come up with an idea, to be able to execute it, to have the reception we've had, to have the support of the city, of our landlord, of the neighborhood of the residents," said Jackson.

"We're excited to jump in in the infancy of this city's redevelopment," Coleman added.

Jackson's advice to entrepreneurs who may want to open a business: "Come right now, don't wait, don't hesitate, Detroit is where it's absolutely at."

Skiles, who is also a small business owner, said she loves supporting local businesses: "It's exciting to see Detroit grow, and change, and expand and to be a part of it. There's something really special about that I think. And I've been enjoying that as a member of the community."
