Suspect Escapes Police Into Woods During Custody Exchange

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A man wanted on an arrest warrant has escaped custody while being transferred from one police agency to another.

The man ran into a wooded area Saturday near Interstate 94 and 26 Mile Road, northeast of Detroit.

Police in Macomb County's Clinton Township stopped him after getting reports of a suspicious person. A records check determined he was being sought by authorities in St. Clair County.

Clinton Township officers were turning him over to Marysville police when he broke free and escaped. Officers and police tracking dogs were unable to locate the man.

Clinton Township Capt. Bruce Wade tells The Detroit News that when something like this happens, police officials "have to go back and take a real strict look at what happened and make sure it doesn't happen again."
