Authorities: 17-Year-Old Boy Shot On Way To School In Pontiac
PONTIAC (WWJ) - A 17-year-old boy is hospitalized after authorities say he was shot on his way to school Monday morning in Pontiac.
According to officials with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, the wounded student was rushed to a local hospital where he was reported to be conscious and alert as of noon.
There was no immediate word about any arrests or a motive for the shooting, on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd near North Perry.
Dr. James Spruill, Superintendent of Pontiac Academy for Excellence, where the victim is a senior, said in a statement that counselling is being at the school.
"We are in close communication with the Oakland County Sheriff's Department as they are investigating the incident," Spruill said. "We want to assure all parents and students that safety is our number one priority. The school day will continue as planned and counseling services are available to all students. We will share more information as the situation develops."
The school initially reported that the student was shot at a bus stop, but officials with the sheriff's office say that information was incorrect.
Sheriff's officials say the shooting victim has been giving conflicting accounts of what happened.
The boy's name was not released.
