The Snack Attack: Chick-fil-A Makes Metro Detroit Debut, But Does It Live Up To The Hype? [TASTE TEST]

Chick-fil-A is finally open in Metro Detroit! The fast-food restaurant took its first order Thursday morning at the Somerset Collection in Troy.

Many people in Metro Detroit, including myself, have never tried Chick-fil-A. But now that one is in our backyard, you don't have any excuse not to try it!

We were invited to preview some of Chick-fil-A's menu a day before the store opened and let me tell you, this place definitely lives up to the hype.

Review: Chick-fil-A, Somerset Collection location

Spicy Chicken Sandwich
A boneless breast of chicken seasoned with a spicy blend of peppers, hand-breaded, pressure cooked in 100% refined peanut oil and served on a toasted, buttered bun with dill pickle chips. Also available on a multigrain bun.

The moment of truth! I have to say, you can really taste the love that went into making this hand-filleted, hand-breaded, fresh chicken sandwich. The layer of breading was thin and crispy -- not at all like the thick and super crunchy breading that some other chains use on their chicken, which are often  cooked when frozen. It also has just the right amount of spice; there's enough to leave a little heat on your tongue, but it's not going to burn your mouth off. The pickles underneath the chicken add a little coolness with a kick of dill seasoning. And the buttered bun is so soft, my fingers left little indentations in it. There's no sauce on this sandwich and honestly, it doesn't need any. But if you like it saucy, I recommend drizzling a mixture of the Chick-fil-a Sauce with the Zesty Buffalo Sauce (a little insider's secret I learned). Delicious!

Waffle Potato Fries
Waffle-shaped potatoes with the skin. Cooked in 100% canola oil until crispy outside and tender inside.

The taste of these fries reminds me of the kind you get at a summer street fair or state fair, just a good ol' fashioned deep-fried potato. The skin is left on the potatoes so you know they're all natural and fresh. And they're freaking huge! There's no way you can eat one of these bad boys in just one bite. The outside is golden and crispy with fluffy, tender potato inside.

Grilled Nuggets
Bite-sized pieces of boneless breast of chicken, marinated with a special blend of seasonings and grilled for a tender and juicy backyard-grilled taste. Available in 8-count or 12-count entrees with your choice of dipping sauce. Also available in 4-count or 6-count Kids Meal servings.

Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen grilled chicken nuggets on a menu, until now. And dare I say these nuggets are even juicier than the chicken sandwich -- because they were! These nuggets tasted like they came straight off the grill, without that charred flavor of course. The flavor here is pretty straight forward -- lightly seasoned grilled chicken.

Superfood Side
Chopped Broccolini and kale blend, tossed in a sweet and tangy maple vinaigrette dressing and topped with flavorful dried sour cherries. Served with a roasted nut blend.

I'm usually so turned off by the bitterness of kale that I almost passed on tasting this dish -- but thank goodness I didn't, because I seriously would have been missing out. The leafy greens and crisp and crunchy with just a little bit of sweetness from the maple vinaigrette dressing, which is amazing. Seriously, I need a bottle of this dressing. The dried cherries add a deep sweetness to the dish, which is complimented by the crunchiness of the roasted nuts.

Greek Yogurt Parfait
Creamy vanilla Greek yogurt with fresh strawberries and blueberries, topped with your choice of Harvest Nut Granola or chocolate cookie crumbs.

This yogurt is so creamy, it's basically like un-frozen ice cream. It actually tastes like real vanilla bean too, none of that artificial flavoring here. I usually stray away from Greek yogurt because it's too thick, but this yogurt is SO smooth -- I was pleasantly surprised. The berries are tart and tasted like they were freshly picked. I'm not sure how it pairs with the granola, but the cookie crumbs added a nice texture and chocolaty taste to the yogurt. It's sold as a side dish but honestly, you could have this for dessert.
