The Snack Attack: Pillsbury Mini Pies Pack A Flavorful Punch In A Tiny Crust [TASTE TEST]

Wouldn't life be grand if there was a way to eat pie with your hands and not make a mess?

Yes, it would be -- and now it's actually possible, with Pillsbury Mini Pies.

The perfectly portioned frozen dessert squares are available in three varieties: Apple Cinnamon, S'mores and Chocolate Lava.

Each box has four frozen mini pies. Inside the box, there's two packages with two attached pies in each, and four icing packets. The pies kind of look like giant raviolis -- they really reminded me of the Hostess fruit pies you get at 7-Eleven. And the icing comes in the same packets as Toaster Strudels.

The Smore's and Chocolate Lava versions go in the oven at 400 degrees for 12-15 minutes; the Apple Cinnamon pies take a little bit longer, 15-20 minutes.

At first I kind of wanted these pies to have more filling, I even got out forks and extra napkins because they puffed up so much while they were cooking -- but there's actually just enough that you can eat these things with your hands without making a sticky mess.

The crust on this pie is noticeably crunchier than the other two pies, graham cracker style. But despite looking like it's speckled with chocolate pieces, you couldn't taste any chocolate in the crust. The marshmallow texture is smooth and not overly sweet, but it doesn't really taste like marshmallow -- it's just kind of vanilla-y. The chocolate layer is very sweet and tastes more like frosting that pudding, but there's not very much of it. Despite all of that, I still really liked this pie. It almost tastes like a warm spin on a MoonPie.

The first thing I noticed about this pie is how buttery the crust tasted -- almost like homemade! There's an even amount of cinnamon to apples, which are very tender and sweet. Some things that are cinnamon apple flavor are all cinnamon and no apple, so it was nice to have an even balance of both. I just with there was more of the fruit! The caramel icing is what really takes this pie over the top. Once the icing melts, it covers the pie with a glaze-like coating that adds a nice texture to the crust.

I had to save the best for last! I swear, the filling in this pie tastes exactly like smooth chocolate pudding. It's basically the perfect lava cake -- a thick brownie-like crust that is crispy around the edges with an ooey, gooey chocolate center. The vanilla icing is nothing special, but it does add a nice sweetness to the deep chocolate flavors.
