What Happens To Campaign Signs After Election Is Over?

DETROIT (WWJ) - Are you tired of seeing all those political signs now that election is over?

You're definitely not alone. And as it turns out, there's a time limit for how long those signs can remain up.

"Campaign signs have to be down within 10 days of the election," said Mt. Clemens City Clerk and Interim Mayor Lisa Borgacz. "It should be the political parties or the campaigners themselves that take those signs down. Anything that's left up, our department of public services will pick them up and discard them."

That means all political signs should be removed by Friday, Nov. 18.

And it's not just Mount Clemens, either. The Michigan Department of Transportation says political signs that are placed along the roadside must be removed within 10 days of the election. Signs removed by MDOT crews will be discarded.

Nobody will be penalized if they forget or leave their campaign sign up, but Borgacz said abiding by the rules is the neighborly thing to do.
