U-M Crime Alert: Student Robbed At Gunpoint Near Campus

ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - An alert has been sent out by officials at the University of Michigan after a student was robbed at gunpoint neat the Ann Arbor campus.

The young woman told police that she was walking — in the area of Prospect and Wells streets, south of Central Campus and east of Packard St. — at around 2:20 a.m. Friday when she was approached by a man who brandished a black handgun and demanded her property.

She gave the man her purse and ran away. She was not injured.

Campus police did not immediately release a description of the suspect.

Meantime, police are reminding students and other both on an off campus to observe the following precautions:

•Look assertive and be aware of your surroundings.
•Be aware that your risk increases in secluded and isolated areas.
•Walk with a trusted friend or co-worker when possible.
•Trust your intuition -- if a particular situation makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, choose an alternative
•Have your keys in hand before you reach your vehicle or residence.
•If you feel threatened on campus, look for a blue light emergency phone or call 911 from any phone.
•Keep rooms and apartments locked at all times.
