Cop, Good Samaritan Rescue Woman From Fiery Car At Lincoln Park ATM

LINCOLN PARK (CBS Detroit) A blackened, smoldering ruin is all that's left of an SUV or minivan that somehow caught fire outside Credit Union One in Lincoln Park.

A passerby shot photos of the vehicle engulfed in flames, and then extinguished after what was visibly a white hot blaze.

Lincoln Park police say an officer rescued the woman who was trapped inside, stuck because her car was too close to the building to open her driver's side door.

"She kind of panicked because she couldn't get out," Police Chief Raymond Watters said. "Employees from the credit union called 911. One of our officers responded. At that time the mechanical devices for the locks had started to melt, so he busted out the in window."

"A passerby, a citizen, was kind enough to help him — and they actually pulled her through the window."

Watters said the woman was not injured and the ATM wasn't damaged.  "This is one of those things where everything worked out great today," he added.

The incident remains under investigation.
