10-Year-Old Killed In Blaze At Detroit Apartment
DETROIT (WWJ) - A 10-year-old girl has died in an apartment fire on the city's west side.
Deputy Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell says extra fire crews were sent to the apartment building on West Chicago and Burt Road to assist with search and rescue initiatives Thursday night.
The young victim, identified as Ania Payne, was in a first floor apartment, possibly with another sibling when the fire broke out.
"The heaviest damage was on the first floor, extended up to the second floor, it's too early to tell.
"We do know that there was a tremendous effort to get everybody out of the building-- it's a two story building ... but unfortunately we were not able to get the 10-year-old in time," said Fornell.
Fornell says all other residents were evacuated safely out of the two-story building.
An investigation into the cause of the blaze is being investigated at this time.
