Woman Shot In Face During Dispute At Detroit Motorcycle Club

DETROIT (WWJ) - Police say a suspect has been taken into custody following an hours-long standoff at a motorcycle clubhouse on Detroit's west side.

The incident began around 6 a.m. Tuesday at the Soul Devils Motorcycle Club along Plymouth Road just east of Schaefer Highway.

Deputy Police Chief Elvin Barren said the club was hosting an overnight party when a fight escalated into gunshots.

"It appears that the suspect and the victim exchanged gunfire. He's shot in the arm, he's at one of the local hospitals in custody, and she's at a separate hospital undergoing treatment," said Barren.

Barren said the suspect, a 35-year-old man, managed to get himself to the hospital after the shooting. At the same time, the 28-year-old woman called police saying the suspect had actually retreated into the clubhouse. As a result, responding law enforcement treated the scene as an armed standoff situation with a barricaded gunman. This went on for a few hours, until the suspect was located.

The woman received a graze wound to the face and is expected to recover.

The woman told police the fight and gunfire started after she refused to have sex with the man. Barren said alcohol appears to be a factor in the shooting, which remains under investigation.

"Right now it does appear, and we have the individual witness, that he would be the aggressor as he allegedly attempted to have sex with her, unwantedly (sic), and she was appearing to be defending herself," said Barren.
