52-year-old Man Arrested, Charged in 2011 Slaying of Elderly Neighbor

SOUTHFIELD (AP) — A Southfield man has been arrested in the cold case slaying of his 81-year-old neighbor.

Southfield police say 52-year-old Darrin Keener was arraigned via video Monday on open murder and mutilation of a body charges.

Helen Gale's badly burned body was found in November 2011 in the rear seat of her car that was set on fire in a Highland Park alley. Police said then that Gale was killed at her home, where she lived alone.

Last year, Southfield police requested help from the Oakland County sheriff's office special investigations and cold case units.

Keener was arrested Friday at his home in Toledo, Ohio. He waived extradition to Michigan.

Keener was ordered held without bond. He faces a May 23 probable cause conference and a May 30 preliminary examination.
