An expert wedding consultant in the Metro Detroit area is Jennifer Charles, the owner/founder of Something Fabulous with her sister and co-owner/founder Kimberly Allen. Charles has 10 years of experience as a wedding consultant and event planner. She gave CBS News Detroit an exclusive interview to help brides know where some of the most stylish places are to get married in the Metro Detroit area and five important tips for planning a fabulous wedding that a bride can count on for one of the most important days of her life.

Tip 1

The first step in planning a wedding is picking out the venue, which will help a bride determine the theme for her wedding. Picking an expert wedding consultant, either for a full or partial service, is important so the bride can discuss her goals, budget and best vendors for her wedding. One venue Charles recommends is the Fox Theatre in downtown Detroit. “It’s amazing and one of the oldest theaters in the country,” Charles said. “The cocktail hour can be on the theater’s balcony and dinner can served on the actual stage.”

Tip 2

Picking up a really good wedding planner at a well-known bookstore is important for a bride to understand all of the things needed to plan for a wedding. She said the planner will include a checklist and timeline to help a bride stay right on track. Making sure to hire an expert wedding consultant that knows all of the A-list vendors around Detroit for things like the wedding cake, invitations, flowers, DJ, band, videographer and rentals is crucial to the success of a bride’s wedding. Another great venue Charles recommends for the event is the Westin Book Cadillac Detroit hotel in downtown Detroit. Charles said the hotel is rich in history, has timeless elegance and has just undergone a $200 million restoration.

Tip 3

Staying within your budget is imperative. “When brides come in to see me, they don’t know what things cost,” Charles said. “So we break it down and give them a realistic map as to what everything costs so the expenditures don’t mount up and they spend money on things they don’t really want or need. The last thing I want is for a bride to say at the end of her wedding she wished she didn’t spend money on something that just didn’t work.” Another great location Charles recommends is the Bay Harbor Village Hotel in Bay Harbor, which is nestled along the shores of Lake Michigan. The hotel offers both indoor and outdoor wedding facilities surrounded by the soothing water of the bay which makes for a very picturesque wedding.

Tip 4

Try to give yourself at least a year to plan your wedding and make sure the wedding consultant you hire understands the logistics it takes to pull off a successful wedding. “We understand the turnaround times such as loading in the day before the wedding,” Charles said. “We also know how the property works, so being on the same page as the vendors the week of the wedding when we call them is very important.” A hotel Charles said offers a beautiful glass atrium for a wedding, a nice menu for the reception and several wedding packages is the Royal Park Hotel in Rochester.

Tip 5

According to Charles, the most important aspect of the wedding process is making sure a bride’s wedding has its own story and is personal for the bride and groom. “It’s the details that I think matter most,” Charles said. “When you begin a design experience such as picking out a theme, for example ‘A Midsummer’s Night Dream,’ or want to include brownies in the shape of a football like NFL player Leon Hall did, your wedding becomes more personal when you incorporate those kinds of things.” Another beautiful place for a wedding is at the Detroit Yacht Club. The wedding facilities there are exquisite with gorgeous chandeliers in the ballroom and so many more amenities.

He says testing the Priss makeup products on his clients to get it just right in the first place will save money in the long run and will also bring back the intimacy to cosmetics, which he feels every woman deserves.

Foundation

Jon says being tested for just the right color of foundation is crucial and will define the entire makeup palette. The Priss moisturizer that is applied before the foundation is a “cult favorite and helps to hide any imperfections.” The Priss foundation is “11 percent more pigmented without the weight of added coverage,” he comments. The number one concern he hears from women is that they don’t want to feel their foundation on their face and the Priss foundation is moisture rich and can be color customized and made for either oily or dry skin. Jon says because of the heightened pigmentation, the Priss foundation will last.

Lighter Lip Colors for Spring

Makeup makes a bit of a shift in the spring. He said it is lighter, more sheer and fresher. Since it is not about the jewel tones anymore or heavier fabrics used in winter, it’s all about feeling lighter, “almost like a rebirth.” Using different shades of pink, orange and purple lipstick are back and Jon says they can look really stunning and help to brighten up a woman’s face.

Eyeshadow, Mascara, Eyebrows and Eyeliner

Jon starts every eye he does with a neutral or peachy pink tone all over the entire eyelid, and then you can apply whatever color you want. It is the peach color that lightens up the eye. Jon advises not to be afraid of mascara, saying “when you think you are done, put two more coats on.” Unless Jon is applying makeup for a smokey eye, he never puts black on the lower lid. Staying away from gray colors is important because those kinds of colors make a woman look tired. Eyebrows are not a trendy thing and Jon believes the best method is to tweeze your own eyebrows which will give brows a natural and beautiful look.

Blush for Cheeks

Staying away from colors such as browns, plums and other dark colors is important during spring. Selecting a mauve, peach or primary orange color looks more like the color of a face actually blushing. It will look so beautiful and natural.

Incorporate Salvaged Items

With the long history of the Detroit area and its many historic homes, there is the opportunity to add elements of these architectural wonders to your abode.

“Incorporating salvaged items such as doors, moldings, windows and architectural elements discarded from local buildings allows you to bring a local flair while capturing the past,” Presti says. “You can bring these into a living space with great effect.”

There are many salvage businesses in the area, but one of the best is Architectural Salvage Warehouse of Detroit. ASWD is a non-profit organization working to repurpose various materials from some of the most historic homes in the Detroit area that have fallen to the wrecking ball. This warehouse is located at 4885 15th Street in Detroit.

Historic Homes as Wall Art

Another option Presti suggests is the use of images of historic homes as wall art.

“This can be done by using your own taken photographs of historical buildings in your area as art,” Presti said. “Then transfer these images to black and white prints in a series, focusing in on architectural details for a much greater impact.”

A simple trip around Detroit and older established communities, such as Birmingham to the north and Wyandotte in the Downriver area, will present ample opportunities to create images of some of the best historic architecture the area has to offer.

Repurpose Old ItemsAlong with the use of repurposed design elements, Presti suggests thinking outside the box and transforming the use of a discarded object in a different manner.”Perhaps discarded wood flooring material could be used as an interesting wall treatment,” Presti said. “Or a gear from a local metal stamping factory could be used as a table base.”

Add In Musical Elements

With the Detroit area known around the world as Motown, incorporating elements of this musical history into an interior design would also add a bit of local flare.

“Records displayed on a wall in a media room or microphones used as an accent on a table are one option,” Presti said. “And, of course, the Temptations playing in the background would add that much more.”

Tie in the Motor CityIncorporating the Motor City theme into the home could be as easy as using classic images of automobiles to adding a chrome hood ornament displayed on a cocktail table. “For the more daring, even discarded parts displayed in a unique way can add that Motor City flair to the home,” she added.Related: Best Flea Markets In Detroit

Keep it LocalThough there can be a strong look to the past, it must be remembered that the Detroit area has a thriving community of artists and musicians, Presti added. With this in mind, she suggests looking for the work of local artist and furniture artisans for adding a fresh look to the living space.
