Ribs, pulled pork, brisket — there are plenty of excellent options in Detroit for barbecue including Union Woodshop, Lockhart’s BBQ and a handful of others.

Union Woodshop

Village of Clarkston, MI 48346

Union Woodshop on Facebook

There is no question about it that the Woodshop is the best place in Metro Detroit for BBQ. They smoke everything and the food is just amazing. From the ribs to the pulled pork and to the brisket, the Union Woodshop does BBQ right. In addition, their burnt ends appetizer is one of a kind. Meaty and saucy, all in one. The desserts are also off the charts, and they offer great pizzas and excellent service. The co-owners, Curt Catallo and Erich Lines, are always around to make sure that the patrons are taken care of. Kid Rock is a regular there as well.

Lockhart’s BBQ

202 East 3rd Street
Royal Oak, MI 48067

A fairly new BBQ joint has opened in downtown Royal Oak and they offer some very solid menu selections. Their burnt ends appetizer is cubed and delicious. The ribs are very good and the meat stays on the bone and is excellent. They have some different sides, including hush puppies, and they offer a very hip new bar. I also like their carry-out, with parking on the side, which is convenient.

Red, Hot, and Blue BBQ

Sterling Heights, MI 48312

Red, Hot, and Blue is a chain BBQ restaurant that offers the basics. The food is very good, and the drinks come in a mason jar. I really enjoy their hush puppies, and their brisket is very good.

Slows BBQ

2138 Michigan Ave
Detroit, Michigan 48216

Slows is a hip BBQ place located in Corktown. They offer tons of different sauces and a very good atmosphere. It is upscale BBQ for downtown, that many people flock to before and after sporting events.

Red Smoke

Red Smoke Barbecue

573 Monroe St
Detroit, MI 48226
(313) 962-2100

Located in Greektown, this place has attractive decor. Opened by Michael and Tasso Teftsis in 2010, it was formerly the home of Monroe Grocery, closed in the early 2000’s. Enjoy standard barbecue fare including brisket, ribs and sides, but you shouldn’t miss the Redsmoke Chili with chunks of pulled pork and optional sour cream and cheese on top.

slows is very good. Prepare to wait. Service is slow. Building is too small.

Famous Dave’s BBQ restaurant has been Channel 4’s Best of BBQ for the past few years- and it is hands down the best BBQ in the “D”! An absolute no-brainer! And their $1 drafts on Wednesday’s are the bomb!

RIBCITY ???? what a joke. Shows you how good that place is, after we ate there once, never went back and said that place would be done within a year, sure enough they closed the doors on that location months ago. Very boring and bland compared to Slow’s. Redsmoke is another great place across from Greektown Casino.
