Looking to learn how to dance so you can stay or get in shape? Look no further for the best Zumba, hip hop and other dance studios in the metro Detroit area.

You won’t find your typical Zumba or other dance forms at Vixen Fitness; instead, it offers “the art of sensual movement,” according to its website, which includes pole dancing classes. The studio has two locations, this one (Detroit) and one in Ypsilanti, and was started in 2007 by Danielle Green, a Detroit native. Classes range from beginner to advanced, and there are also fitness classes and workshops that you can attend. Reservations are required ahead of time, and the lobby opens 15 minutes before the start of classes.

Uptown Body Fitness can be found in downtown Northville, above Utopian Salon & Spa, and it has a variety of classes to choose from. It too offers “pole burlesque,” as well as Zumba, cardio, “boot camp” and a Tahitian class, coming soon. Drop-in prices range from $10 to $20, and three-month memberships can be purchased for $115 and up, depending on the amount of time and/or amount of classes purchased. Uptown also has an in-house nutritionist, if desired.

House of Bastet offers everything from yoga to Samba to pole dancing, and it has a large variety of classes from which to choose. Belly dance, African and contemporary dance is also available, as well as “Ballerobics” on the third Friday of each month. Classes are available for both adults and children, as well, and Bastet offers events like its Personal Cultivation Workshop for children ages three to 16. Street parking is available nearby.

Agora has classes for physical arts, music and aerial arts, and can be found near downtown Ferndale. For physical arts, it has Creative Movement for Kids (ages three to six), Belly Dance (as well as belly dance for kids ages seven to 10), Kuratomi stretching and Yin Yoga. Belly Dance is offered Wednesdays, from 8:30 p.m. 9:30 p.m., and an eight-class package is $70. No experience is necessary, and comfortable clothing is recommended. Belly Dance for Kids is $35 for four classes, and is Mondays from 5:15 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Nafas Fitness is the place to go on this list if you want the largest variety of dance classes. It has Zumba, 80s dance aerobics, hip-hop cardio, belly dance, barre fit, tap dancing and more. Janel Calka-Assaf created the studio and has been teaching dance for over 17 years. Prices range from $12 for a single class to $69 for one month of unlimited classes, and private yoga sessions (one hour) are available for $75. Nafas also offers parties, such as belly dance parties, bachelorette parties and kids birthday parties (hip-hop and other dancing), and these range from $25 per student/participant to $400 total (birthday party). You can sign up for classes online or at the studio.
