Introduce your child to the arts by enrolling them in one of the many amazing art classes offered in Detroit. There are a variety of classes available that specialize in working in a range of different mediums. Some studios teach ceramics and painting while others focus on design and architecture. A local theatre offers classes that teach children the art of puppetry. There is a gallery that holds a monthly art class taught by resident artists, while a contemporary museum features a family art day. Cranbrook hosts a summer art studio that offers an array of ways to unlock the artistic potential of children. Students enrolled in these sessions learn basics like drawing, painting, sculpture and photography. The scope of learning involved is limitless once kids learn the classic forms of art. The community is welcome to attend these art sessions. Cranbrook offers another special art-inspired day camp, including writing sessions which allow kids to explore the art of words in a fun and encouraging environment.

The Museum Of Contemporary Art Detroit is a contemporary exhibition space and art museum that hosts families on the third Sunday of every month. Each session is unique in theme, and projects vary accordingly. This is a great way to get children thinking about and interacting with art in a comfortable setting. Guest speakers and artists guide some classes, while others are more focused on self-guided exploration and discovery. There is always someone there to help, if needed, and it is a cool place to bring the family where everyone can create together. Added bonus: there is a small cafe that has some sweet treats and tasty beverages for sipping.

Puppet ART is a non-profit organization and center focusing on the performance art of puppetry. Many activities and events take place in the different areas located within this building. There is a theater that offers live performances to audiences of all ages. A unique collection of puppets from near and far await visitors in the museum. Housed within the same building is a studio where special classes are held for children who wish to learn the art of puppet making. Puppet making workshops are created to allow children to explore storytelling and the art of making something come alive through words and imagination. This is a wonderful way to introduce children of all ages and skill levels to the wonders of theatre and the art of puppetry.

555 Gallery is a gallery space and artist studio located in a former police precinct. What kid wouldn’t think that was awesome? One Saturday each month, the 555 Gallery holds art classes for children from ages seven to 14. Art Club is taught by talented instructors who are involved in the arts themselves. Projects vary each month and have included creating, painting and firing a clay piece, printmaking, metal stamping, cartooning and masks. Imaginations will run wild in this class, which is exactly how it should be. Please call ahead to reserve a space for each child attending.

The Robot Garage is a place where kids can design and create artistic work composed of everyone’s favorite building block – LEGOS! The studio space houses classes, workshops and camp sessions, which are available for kids of all age ranges, and yes, adults too. The studio features classes for kids such as architecture at various levels and designing an art installation. The Robot Garage offers a massive amount of themed camp sessions as well. These sessions are extended to a ton of different age groups. Using LEGOs to build creatively can inspire kids to push their imaginations in new ways.

One of the awesome things about Creative Arts Studio is the diverse variety of art classes offered within the same studio space. There are also art camps that are scheduled throughout the year, which introduce kids to a little bit of everything. For a supreme amount of fun, register for a class where students are taught to throw on the wheel and hand build a clay piece. Would your future Rembrandt prefer painting? No problem. Talented instructors will teach kids painting techniques. The studio offers painting on canvas, so children will leave with a finished piece of art that they created. There are even jewelry classes offered where children can learn about the basics and leave with a cool set of jewelry they designed.
