Semi Crashes Through I-696 Median In Oak Park

OAK PARK (WWJ) - Police shut down I-696 at Greenfield for several hours Saturday morning after a semi truck crashed through the median wall.

WWJ Traffic Reporter Marti Bufalini said the accident happened around 6 a.m.

"What happened is a semi going westbound went through the median wall, so that put the cab in the left lane on the eastbound side of I-6969 and the trailer in the left lane of westbound I-696," he said.

The driver was taken to the hospital, although the extent of his injuries is unknown.

Bufalini said the location where the accident happened is refered to as the "Oak Park curves" because of the amount of accidents that happen through the winding stretch of freeway.

"In fact, we had an accident similar to this a week ago, maybe a little bit longer than that, but there was a patch in that area where a truck went through the median wall. It's right at that curve and it does come up fast, so it's a problem area, especially for some trucks," he said.

Bufalini said when you pair curvy roads with rainy weather, like there was Saturday morning, the chances of an accident happening are dramatically increased.
