Two State Police Vehicles Involved In Collisions Due To Slick Roads

LANSING (WWJ) -- Slick roads don't go easy on anyone -- not even Michigan State Police vehicles. Two MSP vehicles were hit Saturday morning due to carelessness on slick roads.

"Two of our cars that were policing traffic crashes out on the freeway system were struck by motorists," Lieutenant Michael Shaw said. "We also had another car struck yesterday by an individual that didn't move over a lane and actually refused to stop for the trooper after they were in the collision."

Shaw spoke with WWJ Newsradio 950 on Saturday morning and urged drivers to be especially careful during the evening.

"We're just asking people to make sure they give all first responders a lane -- it is a law in Michigan that you have to move over if it's safe to do so and if not, that you slow down to make it through the scene," Shaw said.

Shaw said that the number one cause of law enforcement fatality in the line of duty is traffic related. Shaw reminded drivers to slow down, keep a safe distance between cars and stay off of cell phones.

"The same three reasons that cause crashes in the summer cause crashes in the winter, they're just magnified because of weather conditions," Shaw said. "But remember on slick roads it probably takes about 10 time the amount of distance to stop as it does on a normal day."
