DETROIT (WWJ) – A motorcyclist has been killed in an accident along a busy section of I-96 in Detroit.
“This is a very grim, in fact gruesome scene,” said WWJ Newsradio 950’s Sandra McNeill, reporting from I-96 at Joy Road — just before the Davison freeway exit, Tuesday afternoon.
Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw said the motorcyclist somehow lost control on the eastbound side of the freeway, flew off his bike and came crashing down in the westbound lanes. There, he was apparently struck by several vehicles.
The victim’s name was not immediately released as police were working to get in contact with his family members.
Steven Shepherd was among bystanders who witnessed the incident.
“It’s just horrible…I mean, it’s terrible. It’s a terrible thing to look at to see somebody spread all over the place; it’s horrible,” he said, adding that he’s never driven a motorcycle and now believes he never will.
“It was real disturbing,” added another witness, Bill Harper, who lives in the area. “It was something that nobody would really wanna see.”
Traffic backed up for miles as both the eastbound and westbound side of I-96 were shut down at the Davision following the accident. All lanes reopened to traffic before 5 p.m.
