Police Chase Ends In Fatal Wrong-Way Crash, 'Explosion' On I-75
DETROIT (WWJ) - What started as a police chase ended in a deadly "explosion" when the 25-year-old suspect drove onto I-75 going the wrong way and crashed into another vehicle, seriously injuring two people.
The situation unfolded around 1:50 a.m. Wednesday as Hamtramck police officers attempted to stop a 2004 Chevy Tahoe that refused to pull over. Officers initiated a chase, during which the suspect -- later identified as Tibias Kwame Anderson -- attempted to strike a patrol vehicle, according to police.
The chase continued until Anderson entered southbound I-75 at Caniff Avenue driving the wrong way. Police say the officers terminated the chase and were leaving the area when "they observed a large explosion" and fire near the Davison Freeway. Officers went to see what happened and discovered Anderson had crashed into another vehicle.
State police say Anderson travelled approximately one mile against traffic before colliding with a 2007 SAAB, which was occupied by a male and female in their early 20's.
Anderson was ejected from his vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Police say troopers later located a gun near his body.
The two passengers in the other vehicle were transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital with serious injuries.
The freeway was closed for nearly six hours as police investigated the crash scene, but has since reopened to traffic.
