GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ/AP) – Schools and government offices have closed in parts of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula amid a winter storm that’s expected to drop up to 10 inches of snow in some areas.

Schools were closed Tuesday in counties including Livingston, Kent, Ottawa, Midland and Saginaw. Some other schools, including the Waterford School District, were canceling evening activities.

As a wintry mix fell across the state, government administrative offices in Flint, East Lansing and Saginaw County were among those closing Tuesday afternoon.

People headed out should be prepared for slick road conditions.

“At the moment, in the city (Detroit) and in nearby suburbs here is freezing rain and sleet,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Dave Bowers said, just after 4 p.m. “So, definitely watch your speed. If those roads are not salted down, they’re going to be getting icy here for the evening rush. And then in the next couple of hours here it will change to all snow.”

Bowers said it looks like Southeast Michigan will get dumped on overnight, with 2-4 inches of snow expected in the Detroit area and 6 inches or more to the west and in some of the northern suburbs.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 p.m. Tuesday for Livingston, Macomb, Oakland and St. Clair counties. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 1 to 11 p.m. Tuesday for Lenawee, Monroe, Washtenaw and Wayne counties.
