Construction Worker Seriously Hurt In SMART Bus Accident

WARREN (WWJ) - A construction worker is critical condition following an accident in Warren Friday morning.

Northbound Ryan Road was shut down at Chicago Road as a result of the incident that authorities said also involved a SMART bus.

Police said the 41-year-old Jason Carey, who was working on a bridge project, was carrying a 36-foot-long railing that stuck out into the northbound lanes. Police said that's when a passing SMART clipped that railing, sending Carey flying into the air and landing on a crane.

Police said Carey suffered severe head injuries and was taken to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital.

Kimberly Boyke, who works at The Blub Tanning Salon right at that intersection, said the construction zone scares her. "They're just speeding right through it and ... this is the second accident that we've had since it started in August. It was supposed to be completed at the end of September and nothing is completed," she said.

That earlier accident, a fatality, happened just north of the construction zone.
