10 Car Pileup, Fuel Spill Close Part Of I-96 During Rush Hour

UPDATE: 6:16 p.m. I-96 at Levan has reopened.

LIVONIA (WWJ) - It's been a mess on the roads for travelers all day. Westbound M-14 is closed at I-275 because of a 300 gallon fuel spill.

Michigan Department of Transportation crews are trying to make sure all of the fuel has been cleaned up before re-opening the freeway.

"About a half a mile of oil dry down here cleaning up a fuel spill, I-96 west is backed up from about Levan trying to get onto I-275 north you can not continue westbound on M-14 you are I-275 north and south ramps to M-14 west are closed as well," said WWJ's Lance Howard from the Newradio 950 traffic chopper.

Meantime, there's a 10 car pileup in the backup and police have closed westbound I-96 at Levan to deal with the chain reaction wreck.

It's unclear what caused the leak. It could be 7 p.m. before the westbound lanes reopen.
