DETROIT (WWJ) - Police say a motorist was killed in Detroit after their van crashed into the back of a DDOT bus and burst into flames.

Michigan State Police say the crash happened around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday on I-94 between Dickinson Road and Conner Avenue.

According to police, the full-size van was traveling westbound on I-94 when the driver failed to stop before rear-ending a DDOT bus that was stuck in traffic in the right lane. The van caught fire and the driver was unable to escape, police said. The van driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say seatbelt use and other factors are unknown at this time.

Police are waiting to confirm the identity of the driver before releasing additional information. An autopsy is expected to be completed later Wednesday.

Westbound I-94 closed was closed for nearly four hours, but has since reopened.

An investigation is ongoing.
