Authorities Release Name Of Worker Crushed To Death

BUENA VISTA TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Authorities have released the name of a 31-year-old worker who died after being crushed at a steel plant near Saginaw.

Authorities say Andrew Beckman was loading 12-foot steel rods onto a trailer when the 3,100 pound load appeared to shift, pinning him against a steel shelf.

The accident happened around 9:45 p.m. Monday at Peerless Steel in Buena Vista Township, about 80 miles northwest of Detroit. Investigators say Beckman might have been pinned for five minutes before he was discovered by coworkers, The Saginaw News reported.

Emergency crews quickly responded to the plant after the accident was reported, but Capt. Craig Gotham said there was nothing they could do to save Beckman. He was declared dead at the scene.

Beckman, of Saginaw, was employed for about two years at Peerless Steel.

The incident remains under investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
