Winter Weather Advisory In Effect For Parts Of Southeast Michigan

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ/AP) - The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory until noon on Tuesday for areas north and west of Detroit.

The advisory includes Oakland, Washtenaw, Livingston, Shiawassee and Genessee counties. Total accumulations of up to four inches could fall in some areas, including Pontiac, Howell, Ann Arbor and Flint.

Icy roads and gusty winds have been causing dangerous driving conditions in parts of Michigan as the state braces for another round of lake-effect snow.

"It's just flurries and heavier snow showers getting carried across the states...and just about everybody is fair game for that," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Dave Bowers.

Bowers said the west part of the state will see a little bit more accumulation, but all of southeast Michigan may a fresh coating of snow overnight. It'll be bitterly cold, too, with a low overnight of 14 degrees, feeling like below zero with the wind chill.

"So this is more like the middle of January, or even the, rather, the beginning of winter," Bowers said. "This is just an extraordinarily cold air mass, 15-20 degrees below normal on average for the next few days."

The National Weather Service reports snow was falling in wide areas of the state Monday, with wind gusts reaching 28 miles per hour at Copper Harbor at the tip of upper Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula and at Flint in the central Lower Peninsula. Slippery roads and spin-out crashes were reported Monday morning in the metro Detroit area, where there was a light coating of snow on the ground.

Parts of the state along Lake Michigan could see 6 to 12 inches of snow into Tuesday, with 12 to 16 inches possible in places.  A several-day storm last week brought up to 42.5 inches of snow in the Upper Peninsula.
