Cities Declare Snow Emergencies As Winter Storm Hits Metro Detroit Area

WOODHAVEN (WWJ) - Even before the snow started falling, some cities began declaring snow emergencies and/or reminding residents about their snow plowing policies.

When a city or township declares a snow emergency, they are ordering all residents to move their vehicles off city streets during the effect of the order to allow proper plowing and salting of roadways.

Livonia city administrators put a message on Facebook, alerting that should a snow emergency go into effect, all vehicles parked in the street would have to be removed until the roadway has been entirely cleared.

If people don't move their vehicles off the streets during snow emergencies, they could be fined or have their cars and trucks towed. Snow emergency routes, which are marked by red and white signs, are the first priority for snow removal.

Auburn Hills has also declared a snow emergency, effective Sunday at 8:00 am and expiring on Monday at 5:00 pm. There will be no parking allowed on streets in residential neighborhoods, which will allow city workers to clear the roads as quickly as possible. Vehicles parked on residential streets could be towed at the owner's expense.

Abandoned vehicles along I-75, M-59 and major roadways will be towed prior to the storm.

If you do not see your city listed -- go online to your city or township website for up to date snow emergencies.
