Bitter Cold Settles In Across Metro Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Bitterly cold temperatures have settled in across southeastern Michigan after several days of snow hit parts of the state.

CBS 62 Chief Meteorologist Jim Madaus said it was about 7 degrees in Detroit Thursday morning, and the temperature won't be getting much higher.

"Get ready for some very cold weather today. It's only expected to be between 10 and 15 degrees," said Madaus. "We're looking at lots of sunshine, so it's going to be a good-looking day but definitely cold."

The Detroit Public Schools district was reopening Thursday after canceling classes for three days starting Monday as crews worked to clear snow. Officials were worried about students' ability to get to and from school.

A storm Sunday and Monday gave the Detroit area up to 16.7 inches -- the most since 19.3 inches fell in December 1974 and the third biggest snowfall on record. The snowy weather contributed to traffic crashes that claimed at least five lives on Tuesday and Wednesday.
