LIVONIA (WWJ) – Authorities have reopened a stretch of I-96 in Livonia hours after a semi-truck rolled over during an accident, spilling garbage across the freeway.

The accident happened just before 6 a.m. Wednesday on westbound I-96 at Merriman Road.

It wasn’t immediately clear what led to the accident, but it ended with a semi-truck on its side and another vehicle on fire.

“The truck that’s laying on its side, it’s one of those really long 40-, 45-foot garbage haulers — the top came off of that and now there’s garbage all over the freeway here. It’s going to be a long time before they get this one cleared up,” WWJ’s Bill Szumanski reported from above the scene in Chopper 950.

Officials say two people received minor injuries in the crash.

Drivers were urged to avoid the area as crews cleared the spilled garbage and debris from the freeway before removing the semi-truck.

The westbound lanes of I-96 were shut down for more than six hours, but reopened to traffic around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.
