Winter Weather Advisory: Heavy Snow Expected Saturday Afternoon

DETROIT (WWJ) - Metro Detroit is getting a first taste of winter weather.

A Winter Weather Advisory is currently in effect until 9 p.m. Saturday for southeast Michigan. Forecasters say two to four inches of snow is likely, but more is possible in some spots.

Light snow will continue to fall through the morning, mainly across Wayne County. Snow will then expand across the rest of the region in the early afternoon and may become heavy at times late in the day. The rapid snowfall could cause travel difficulties with slippery roads and limited visibilities.

Temperatures near the surface will greatly affect how efficiently snow is able to accumulate. This will result in accumulations varying across the area from as little as one or two inches near the Ohio state line to as much at four to six inches over far northern Wayne County.

"We're looking at temperatures jumping to above that freezing mark so there could be areas of rain," said CBS 62 Chief Meteorologist Jim Madaus. "And keep in mind also that the ground is still relatively warm, so a lot of the snow as soon as it hits will melt, but the snow will continue."

Snow will diminish overnight as temperatures take a plunge to around 20 degrees. Those falling temperatures tonight may lead to slick spots on the roads, so motorists should use extreme caution when driving.

Here's the local forecast from the CBS Detroit weather team:

Saturday -- Snow this morning will get heavier by this afternoon and into the evening before tapering off overnight. Storm total 3-6 inches. High 37F. Low 24F.

Sunday -- Intervals of clouds and sunshine. High 31F. Low 17F.

Monday -- Cloudy skies early will become partly cloudy later in the day. High 37F. Low 26F.

Tuesday -- Sun and a few passing clouds. High 39F. Low 28F.

Wednesday -- Mainly sunny, except for a few afternoon clouds. High 46F. Low 40F.
