Record-Setting Temperatures Expected In Metro Detroit, Warmest Winter Weather In 122 Years

DETROIT (WWJ) - Some would say we're living in Bizarro World. Michigan is used to setting weather records in the winter but it's usually because of snow and bitter cold, not because of heat. Well, prepare to have your mind blown.

Forecasters say temperatures in southeastern Michigan are expected to hit at least 60 degrees on Wednesday -- just two days before Christmas. It could be one for the record books as the warmest temperature ever recorded in metro Detroit on this day was 56 degrees, back in 1893.

With the warmer weather, forecasters are warning there could be a chance of thunderstorms into the evening as night falls, and some of those storms could be severe with wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour.

The warm weather will stick around for another potential record-breaking day on Thursday with temps expected to be around 50 degrees. Things will take a slight dip on Friday, bringing temperatures down to around 40, but at least we'll have some sunshine. Rounding out the weekend, forecasters say we'll see some rain on-and-off with mild temperatures between 40 and 50 degrees.

So, if you were dreaming of a white Christmas... at least there's always next year.

Here's the local forecast from the CBS Detroit weather team:

Wednesday -- More clouds than sun; warm with a shower in places. A couple of evening showers and a thunderstorm; otherwise, cloudy, windy and mild. High 61F. Low 40F.

Thursday -- Except for a few afternoon clouds, mainly sunny. Record high temperatures expected. High around 50F. Low 37F.

Friday (Christmas Day) -- Cooler; mostly cloudy with periods of sunshine. High 43F. Low 36F.
